Yoga – mind. body. breath.

In Sanskrit, Yoga is the root word ‘yuj’, which translates to ‘yoke’ or ‘unite’ referring to the bringing together of the mind, body and breath.

The breath is key in Yoga; it’s this that makes it different to any other forms of physical exercise. The breath is what makes yoga that whole mind body experience and what makes it so wonderful. It’s an ancient practice, originating in India some 5000 years ago. The fact it has lasted so long and is proving more popular than ever the world over tells you how amazing the practice of Yoga is.

There are many limbs to Yoga and the western approach is very much focused on Hatha yoga – the physical asanas or postures – and it is this aspect of Yoga you will undoubtedly be most familiar with.

Yoga is a mind body practice with so many benefits!  You can take from it whatever aspect of the practice you need. You may be drawn to yoga as a form of physical exercise bringing strength, balance, flexibility, length and openness. Or perhaps you are seeking the calming benefits of pranayama and meditation – using the breath to bring relaxation and stillness to the mind.

When you own your breath, nobody can steal your peace.

There are many different styles of yoga; some more physical, others more focused on the spiritual teachings of yoga practice. Whichever style you choose, Yoga brings a sense of wellbeing, some much needed balance amongst the chaos of modern life. I can guarantee you will leave your yoga class feeling calmer, more present in your thoughts and more open in your body. You will leave feeling your soul glow!

Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down.

– Jigar Gor

There is no ego in yoga. There is no competitive element. It’s your practice. And that’s exactly what it is. A practice. You work within your own body’s limitations, whatever they may be on the day.

Take time to do what makes your soul happy.
